Unity and the Future of Clinical Education

I had the opportunity to present at the Medical Device and Diagnostics – Clinical & Sales Training Conference in Atlanta this month. The focus of the presentation was on the role of Unity as a key technology platform in the future of clinical education.

We are strong believers in Unity's capabilities and see it replacing Flash and HTML5 as the main interactive tool for clinical education. The main reasons for this include:

Multiple outputs

Unity can export to every major technology platform off the same code base. Need web, iPad and Oculus Riff?  No problem. This creates huge flexibility and cost advantages.

Interactivity

Unity provides a strong foundation to enable interactivity and teach key concepts in a way that other interactive platforms cannot.

Augmented & Virtual Reality (AR/VR)

AR/VR will be a driving force in clinical education as it allows us to understand and experience complex medical concepts in a highly visual and interactive way. Unity and Unity SDK are the primary development engines for AR/VR devices such as Oculus, zSpace, Gear VR and a host of others.

Clinical education with Unity Demo

During the conference, Optera presented a zSpace application set based on stent placements for aortic aneurisms. This was coupled with an accompanying 3D print of the same pathology.

We were amazed at how well received the platform was by the attendees who commented on how amazing the technology is, how well it's being used, and how quickly it's advancing.

Optera has a very strong AR/VR practice and produced multiple commercial projects in the clinical AR/VR space in the last year. To strengthen this capability, we also became a zSpace reseller and development partner in 2014.

Optera will continue its research and proof of concept projects for Unity moving forward. We have already successfully created integration between Unity and  salesforce.com, and have additional projects lined up, including:

  • Unity-based SCORM compliant course shell
  • A physical interface between unity and selected surgical instruments and devices
